CONCLUSION

The early part of this chapter sketched the evolution of political representations, and tried to indicate the historical relevance of important developments such as the introduction of portraiture, the escalation of personal types at Rome under the Republic, and the subsequent imperial monopolization of coin designs. The central sections discussed the fundamental questions of the intention behind the choice of themes, of the manner in which they were expressed, and of how they were received. Finally, four aspects of the typology of power were considered in somewhat greater detail, to give an impression of what may be gained by asking more specific questions of the material.

One is left with the impression that contemporary concerns have unlocked much of value in the subject, from the emphasis on propaganda and the attempt to understand how that concept might apply to antiquity, to the fashion for semiotics and the analysis of imagery as a form of language. A clear lesson is that both approaches have proved most fruitful when the coinage has been viewed in the context of the other relevant material and literary evidence.
